MDL 277 - Clinical Blood Banking Techniques (4 CR.)

Course Description

Provides training in techniques, procedures, and interpretations in Blood Banking in a clinical laboratory or simulated laboratory setting. Clinical 12 hours a week.

General Course Purpose

In conjunction with lecture courses in clinical blood banking, the purpose of this course is to provide entry level competency needed for employment in an accredited clinical laboratory.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: MDL 215 and MDL 216 with a grade of "C" or better and be enrolled in the second year of the Medical Laboratory Technology AAS degree program or receive program director approval.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

• Perform typing and compatibility of blood within a reasonable length of time
• Demonstrate safe operation of blood bank instruments including routine start-up, reagent preparation, and preventive maintenance.
• Keep accurate records of all procedures performed in the blood bank
• Identify normal antibodies using the procedures available
• Demonstrate ability to solve problems resulting from blood incompatibilities
• Participate in quality assurance
• Demonstrate confidence in their ability to perform routine blood banking procedures.
• Select and release correct blood products based on type and condition.
