DNH 244 - Dental Hygiene IV (5 CR.)
Course Description
This course Introduces advanced skills and the dental hygienist's role in providing treatment for special patient populations. Includes supervised clinical practice in the dental hygiene clinic and/or off-campus clinical rotations at various community facilities. Emphasizes treatment of patients demonstrating periodontal involvement, stressing application and correlation of knowledge and skills from previous semesters. Lecture 1 hour per week. Clinical 12 hours per week. Total 13 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
To prepare the dental hygiene student for more advanced and specialized treatment skills required for dental hygiene practice and to have an appreciation of the dental hygiene process of care for special patient populations.

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss and demonstrate advanced fulcrum techniques.
- Discuss the management of patients with a respiratory disease.
- Discuss the management of patients with cardiovascular disease.
- Discuss the management of patients with diabetes mellitus.
- Discuss the management of patients with cancer.
- Discuss the management of patients with blood disorders.
- Discuss the management of patients with a cleft lip/palate.
- Discuss the management of the oral and maxillofacial surgery patient.
- Plan and provide complete dental hygiene care for special patient populations.
